Plenty of articles on Google addressing some of the outrageous ripoffs rent a car companies perpetrate on their customers, might be worth some research..

If you are taking the car for a 12 hour drive i'd be very wary of mileage charges and drop off fees on top of all the other fees and charges..

I love taking the train from NYC to DC. It's much more comfortable than the bus and it ends right in the middle of DC. I wouldn't take the bus - unless the fares are now very different.
