I was thinking about this earlier. I love to travel, I have travelled extensively in the US and I have my favorite eating out cities. I try to avoid chains when I travel, so no fast food stops, no chain restaurants when possible. I look for family run places, hole in the wall places, and unusual unique eateries. I also look at choice, how many unique and interesting and good places does a town or city offer
SO that are your favoorites?
My top 5 are
5 Boston A lot of Italian Influences, but not limited and plenty of local and family eateries with good food all around

4 Las Vegas Tends to be trendy but also tends to be very very good. Broad range of prices, mostly towards the higher end.

3 Washington DC When you say they have everything, they have EVERYTHING!!!! Best Ethnic choices in the nation

2 New York How can a top 5 list not include the Big Apple?

1 New Orleans LA Walk into any hole in the wall, family-run dive and feel like you are getting a gourmet meal. I mean the sandwiches are 5 Star, go into any gourmet place and you won't want to eat anywhere else. Truly the best of the best in the USA.

RUNNERS UP AMARILLO TX (Avoid if you are a vegetarian) and Memphis (Again, they don't do tofu BarBQue) and San Franciso (Yes they do Tofu BarBQue but not ricearoni)

i was surprised chicago doesn't make the list. you got the "famous" chicago deep dish pizza, personally i hate deep dish and am surprised chicago gets the rep for deep dish as paper think crust seems to be the norm in true chicago true italian places and not just the touristy spots like ginos east.

steakhouses, chicago has a number of great steak houses, gene and georgettis benig my fav...ya i know i spelled it wrong.

you got some great diners like white palace grill as well as other lesser knwon ones. you got chicago hot dogs and all the famous hot dog joints. i think they may have closed but you had dougs dogs which was super unique like alligator moose dogs and things like that.

chicago also has great ethnic restaurants bc its so diverse, china town, some great eastern european food, great italian, west indian population in rogers park with some great caribbean / jamican spots. als beef and italian beef in general.

you also got the higher end trendy restaurant scene with places like modo i believe its called where they do that gastro something cooking with liquid nitrogen and crazy sampling meals.

you also got a lot of these top chf guys opening up spots that chuy guy opened up one but it sucekd they were super rude and rushed you out and yelled at you to eat faster, leave and take your desert to go. that rick bayless has a couple good mexican spots too i loved xocoo or osmething like that the more casual one.

NYC, San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans are my top favorites for sheer choice of excellent quality. But I've got love for Memphis, Boston/Cambridge, LA, Portland, and a host of others too.
