That's interesting -- I had also struggled with Mont st Michel, and decided not to count it.

Same here.
I considered listing Eilean Donan Castle, too, but it has a footbridge.

Really creative question. Interesting and difficult to quantify:

In the US:
Los Angeles - Catalina Island
San Diego - Coronado Island (but it's not an island, it's a peninsula)
San Francisco - Alcatraz and Angel Islands
Portland - Swan Island, Sauvie Island and Hayden Island
Seattle - Mercer Island, Bainbridge Island
Florida - all of the Florida Keys (how many is that?)
New York - Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn/Queens/LI (all on the "same" island)

In Canada:
Toronto - the Toronto Islands in the harbor
Montreal - Ile des Soeurs and Ile Ste-Helene, and Montreal itself (almost forgot that), as well as the adjacent city of Laval (also on an island)

In Europe:
UK - a bBIG island, does that count?
Spain - Gran Canaria and Mallorca
Portugal - Madeira
Greece - Skiathos, Mykonos and Paros
France - Corsica and Ile-de-la-Cite' (within Paris, contains Notre-Dame)
Italy - Sicily, Sardinia, Elba and the city of Venice (impossible to know how many of the 117+/- islands you actually set foot on)

I'm an LA person and I've never been to Hawaii. The place just doesn't call me.

wow, let me try and count but I don't know if I can begin to remember all of them: I can count about 30, but I don't know if I am forgetting some: it doesn't make any difference, it has been a lot, including Hong Kong and Mijorca. I already remember 3 I forgot: Catalina Island, Vancouver, and Balboa.

I'd add that anyone who's ever visited Venice, Amsterdam, Stockholm, or St. Petersburg (Russia) has automatically been on many islands -- but as the OP said, islands connected by bridges don't count for this exercise.

I forgot a big one:

Honshu
