Having been to Steamboat as well as the other major Colorado resort towns in the last few years ... it's unlikely you'll save any money going there instead of Aspen at Christmas.

Jackson rates as pricey as the rest of the top resorts here, too.

IMO, your choices for the best skiing at Christmas will be the Colorado destination resorts. If the prices at Aspen, Vail, or Steamboat Springs are out of your range, consider Copper Mountain or Keystone which both have a lot of intermediate skiing ... although I prefer Copper between these two.

Of course, the skiing depends upon where the snow is each year. We've seen some years where the only viable skiing in the USA was in the Rockies ... and some years where everywhere you could go had good to great conditions. PNW, NewEngland, and CA skiing have had their ups and downs through the last decade. If you can, make some preliminary reservations now and watch the reports as it gets closer to Christmas before making that final decision.

I'm no skier but have been to Crested Butte. How does that compare with the other's suggested?

Awesome little ski town with a great "little" mountain. A lot less variation in terrain there than one would get in Vail, Breckenridge, etc... and A LOT more isolated. Still not too tough to get to with jets flying into nearby Gunnison, though.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I need to talk to my friend, and I'm grateful to get some good input here.
