Canaima national park in Venezuela, where we canoed/trekked to the bottom of Angel Falls. Tayrana in northern Colombia which involves a 2-hour hike to get to the campsite.

Khiva, Uzbek SSR, in 1985. Also Bukhara and Samarkand, but those two places are slightly closer to the beaten track.

Morocco.

Now that's exotic, especially compared with some of the places listed here.

It's even in Africa!

Where in Morocco? I landed at Casa Blanca then over to Agadir for a couple of weeks. We took a one day visit to Taroudant.

I took the Tarifa - Tangier ferry, hurried out of Tangier to Meknes, spent a few days there, took a bus to Rissani and stayed at an auberge (inn) in the Saharan dunes, and then took another long bus to Marrakesh, which I flew out of back to Barcelona.

(Of course I was kidding about it being more exotic than the other posts. Actually, I think it's a lot less exotic than most responses here, as it's pretty easy to reach from Spain - that's what I did)

Thailand...

When we were in Bangkok, I went to the hotel spa for a pedicure. The girl doing my nails asked where I was from and I said that I was living in Japan at the time but before that we lived in San Diego...

She sighed and said "ohh California...so exotic!"

Still very nice places

My most exotic place will be next month in North Korea.

I definitely caught the kidding part.

My trip was not very pleasurable. I was working a temporary assignment for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I flew in from Paris to Casa Blanca and was driven to Agadir. The work did not proceed as planned when the American and Canadian shippers cancelled their shipments and I spent two weeks getting a flight out while my Moroccoan co-workers didn't know what to do with me. They took me out to the King's huge orange grove (orchard?) and had planned to take me over to Marrakesh but decided instead to go to Taroudant. There I promptly had my wallet pick pocketed! The police station at Taroudant was the most interesting part of the trip. They didn't even know what a credit card was. Ha!

Morocco is definitely an interesting place but I agree it's not too exotic.
