Nepal for trekking and mountaineering in the Himalaya
Ecuador for everything from high Andes climbing and trekking to rainforests, beaches & the Galapagos
Alaska (not a country but larger than most) for everything arctic and subarctic
Thailand for tropical splendor, sailing, great food
New Zealand for probably the best combination of all of the above
I know I'm gonna take the crown for the most ecocentric places! Ironically all my top 5 are closer from where I live than from NYC to LA!
While I have more than 5 individual places listed, I'm going to only count each region as a place.
1) Out Islands of the Bahamas (Rum Cay, Mayaguana and Staniel Cay especially)---by far my favorite places in the world!
2) Subarctic Northern Quebec (Schefferville, End of the Trans Taiga Rd in Caniapsiscau, the ghost town of Nitchequon which is 100 mi from nearest road and only accessable by canoe, floatplane or snowmobile in winter)! This area is my 2nd fav destination on the globe, and I actually call it "The Bahamas Of The North!"
3) Dominica
4) Baffin Island in Arctic Canada--tons of inuit and natives that intrigue me
5) Rivera Maya from Cancun to 150 mi south of there.
Only been to the first, but I'm hoping to go to second in summer of 2013. 3, 4 and 5 no plans, but maybe someday.

Cool... I didn't know New Zealand would have all of the above. My dad has been there years ago. I guess he didn't do much travelling. I'd go Indonesia (specifically Bali) over Thailand. Nice choices!

Bali vs. Thailand is a tough choice to be sure.
As for NZ, it doesn't technically have arctic/subarctic climates like Alaska but it does have some high mountains and fjords on the South Island that are reminiscient of some of the terrain found in Alaska. It also doesn't have truly tropical environs, but the northern end of the North Island has some gorgeous white sand beaches with tropical-like foliage, clear blue water and year-round warm weather.
1. Germany for sure. I want to visit it for the history, for the culture and most importantly, for how they have made it so modern.
2. The Maldives. I just think the water looks spectacular.
3. Japan! Because it looks so crazy
4. Turkey. Heard it's pretty cool
5. Last but not least, a circle tour of Scandinavia. From Norway to Sweden, from Finland to Latvia to Eastonia - I want to see it all!
Australia
Portugal/Spain
England/Ireland
Egypt
Jamaica
