I put a copy of my passport in my luggage in case it gets lost.

Actually until after 9/11 and a bit you did not need a passport to fly to Canada or Mexico. Throughout Europe you do not require a passport to fly from country to country.

The practicality today makes it quite unlikely that you will get on an airplane without a passport. Basically the airlines know that they may very well be required to fly an improperly documented passenger back where they came from. Was somewhat of a game if you flew to Mexico with children. They would bounce a kid in Mexico because a parental permission was missing. That by the way occurred only on US airlines. So if you traveled in on a Mexican one no problem...
