This has nothing to do with willingness. The ONLY aid we can offer is relaying an SOS signal. Meaning, if we see an SOS or distress signal from the sky, we relay the coordinates to a nearby station. Thats it. This isnt Family Robinson or Giligan's Island.

If you had read the article, you would have known that the plane was in the vicinity, the guy in the boat was lost and adrift, the plane dropped altitude really low to get the BEARING on the guy and relay it to emergency personnel if they spotted him. The pilot asked the passengers to look out their windows for the fellow in the ship. The passengers spotted him and his location was relayed to the authorities and the fellow's life was saved.

The bottom line and safety are the top priority for any reputable passenger airline - regardless of nationality. That doesn't preclude having other goals and attributes.
