Anyone used Amtrak's travel packages? (best, hotel, hotel, vacation)

Hello, this is my first time posting on the travel section of city-data but I've always gotten great advice here! We are thinking of taking a family vacation to NYC at Christmas time and were thinking of using the Amtrak vacation package which includes the hotel stay, round trip rail fare etc. Has anyone else used this? Is it a good time to visit the Big Apple? We will be traveling from alexandria, VA so it's not too long a ride.
