my husband and i will be driving from savannah georgia back home to los angeles ca late next month...we probably will be taking highway 20 all the way to the 10 freeway once we are out of Birmingham. has anyone done this drive before? the states we will be driving through taking this route will be Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, texas, new mexico and arizona. I have no idea how the weather is like during the winter in these states...we will be on a time limit so we will try and get there as soon as 2 days, 3 if necessary...if all goes smooth and there are no road obstacles. can anyone give me an insight of what to expect weather wise? someone who has travelled through these states during the winter? i kno the weather can be unpredictable and theres no telling now..i just want opinions. thanks...

so long as you have money for the gas, motels and meals you'll be fine.
fwiw... unless you have reason to go through Atlanta and Dallas... I'd cut down to I-10 right away

We took that route in 1990 to San Diego and Texas is a really long state. We did it the last of September or early October. Can't remember exactly. We got past Birmingham the first day from North Carolina so our trip would have been similar to yours except maybe some of the weather.

I wonder if the poster above has a good idea to check the weather first and then maybe go 10 if the weather in Texas looks bad through Dallas. Just keep your options open.

2011 we went to Ventura and followed I-40 the whole way. I like 10 and 20 better than I-40 I think but I-40 has fewer miles to our destination for us.

Oh, and are you aware that you will have to have your car checked when you go into California. They will be checking for bugs or anything else that would harm their agriculture. Our first trip we ended up losing some fruit at the border, so don't take along too much unpackaged food. We usually carry fruit for snacks in our car when we travel. We knew better the second trip.

I-10 all the way, least amount of problems road wise and weatherwise. Fruit inspection, it's been many many years since we have had to stop for fruit inspection at any CA border.

2500 miles in two days is ambitious, for safety i'd budget 4 days and if you get there sooner so much the better. Are you going to be driving backi? if so whats the turn around time?
I'd start off on the I-40, and at some point making your way to I-10 to cross the mountains .keeping an ear to the weather channel you could possibly do the whole trip on I-40, but if bad weather is in the forecast i'd drop down to I-10 to avoid snow.

i know it sounds crazy, but you see we are taking off dec 21 and we are hoping to arrive the 23rd. it is possible if all goes according to plan. but i know that we should drive expecting the worse i.e. road construction, highways or roads being closed and weather. we are hoping we make it on time for christmas eve. my husband is military and gets released for leave on the 21st, so thats the only day we can leave.

I'll presume there will be 2 drivers? best idea is change drivers everytime you stop for gas and hope one of you dont get really really tired of driving as you'll be doing somewhere between 5-7hr stretches apiece all the way.
Doing it all on I-40 will take minimum of 40hours,then you add stopping time on top of that ;8 hours in motel and the trip now takes 48 hours, expect to fill up 10 times add 15 minutes per, breakfast lunch and suppers 45min a piece..All in 2 days?

Sounds like an adventure,, let us know how it goes and your points to ponder for others who may be subjected to making a similar trip..
Good luck..And Merry Christmas..
