I have noticed these bags in some old movies from the 1960's and 1970's. The picture below shows it wider than the height. But I have also seen some where they are taller and less wide. It looks about the size of a magazine/notebook. I wonder how these came about and what exactly they were designed for. Were they sold at airports? Do people still use these?
They are about the size of a smaller gym bag. They were given as premiums and promotional items. They are a vinyl type material, not all that durable. I imagine most of them have rotted away by now.
That one is probably about 12 x 16 and suitable for carrying on things you'd want to have with you during the flight or even as an overnight type bag. People didn't carry as much junk back then. There were no electronic gadgets, you'd get on a plane with a book or the newspaper, and flight attendants would give you a pack of playing cards if you requested them.
I remember flying to visit my cousins back in the early 1970's and we got fed a full meal (I recall it being gross) on a two hour flight, we not only got to go into the cockpit but we also got to sit in the pilots seat, and to use the toilet in the airport I had to put a nickel into the slot to get the door to open.

I could use a 12x14x16 bag... taking my 1st flight on Spirit. Just had to try the $59 full fare for 1200 mile trip.
Of course they charge for everything (carryon is $20), but the 'Under Seat" is free...
In search OF...a NICE HD compact 'underseat' bag to house Computer, stuff and clothes for a week... Having detachable backpack straps would be a plus, as I will be using a motorcycle or bus or hiking for transport.
Look at Kipling for super lightweight and durable totes and backpacks. I use a sleeve to protect my laptop and put it in my Kipling duffle. Less advertisement that it contains a laptop than a typical laptop bag.

That's a "flight bag". I can't imagine that you would not be able to buy anew one with a little shopping. I've seen them just recently made out of leather.

Those flight bags were nearly identical to the gym bags that were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s.
We had two of the same bags from a flight we took with PanAm in 1965. Every passenger received a bag when entered the airplane on that flight.
