Got my geography in a knot. I thought Montenegro was the capital city of Albania. You are talking about Montenegro of the former Yugoslavian republic. Sorry. Practically next door. Either way, Alitalia is fine. The other carrier that could take you closer is Olympic Airways of Greece, which can take you non-stop to Athens, but they don't fly out of Boston, if I recall. Their American hub is JFK. They were on the runway in front of us at JFK awaiting take-off.

I've travelled several times with them to Rome and Milan. They are not a 5 star airline but you'll be fine. They are safe, good inflight service, some gorgeous flight attendants. Plus, FCO has excellent connections to the Balkans, probably more than any other major European airport.

Not recently, but we used Alitalia back and forth between Rome and LAX very often last decade (2000 - 2007). Probably a dozen times or more.

Great post.

FCO is where most Eastern Europeans want to be anyway (), so the good connections make sense. I actually think FCO has better connections to the Balkans than does nearby Athens, and Olympic Airways.

Thank you everyone!! Your posts are great. I am getting over my fears now! I am also looking at the Delta connection operated by Air France. I just read reviews on Air France and they are about the same as Alitalia.

European airlines generally offer better service than American ones. I highly doubt you'll have a poor experience with AZ or AF.
