Venice would probably be another cool place for an extended stay though it would be expensive.
I think Venice would get very old after a week or so. There is just so much to see/do there, and it's very expensive.

Rome on the other hand...

I agree about Venice. Granted, I was there 40 years ago when it was quite different from today, but even then, I had enough of it after two days (and it was incredibly expensive, even then!) It was kind of like eating some great dessert--after the first piece it's tempting to have a second, but after the second piece, you don't want to even look at it! I also agree about Rome--would love to rent an apartment and just live there for a month!

I would pick Rome (1) and Sydney (2) as my city experiences. Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Vietnam (Ho Chi Mihn City) as my Asian experience (count as one stop = 3). Raratonga (4) in the Cook Islands for my south sea experience (be sure to fly over to Easter Island). Dubai (5) as my middle eastern experience. For South America I've only been to a few cities so don't have a wide set to choose from. I'll have to suggest one of the other poster's picks such as Rio (6).
