Sacramento CA to Winston Salem NC (best, trips, best route, mountains)

My family and I are moving to NC this coming January or February and planning to drive. What is the best route coming from Sacramento CA to Winston Salem NC during this season? We were thinking of using the I40 route but was afraid of the snows. How safe is the I10?

Any suggestions are welcome.

I-40 should be fine. The only areas you should be concerned about snows are through north-central AZ (Williams/Flagstaff) and then the mountains of TN/NC. There could be snow/ice anywhere between AZ and NC but its unlikely. Just watch the forecasts and if it looks like a bad snow/ice storm is brewing then use I-10 as a backup option.

It's all about the weather THAT specific week.

If it's clear enough... Get over the mountain where you are.
If not... then head south (99/5) before going east.
Personally... I detest I-40 and even without the weather issues will plan trips to avoid it.

Sac to Reno to Phoenix (and I-10) before heading east
In west Texas... get onto I-20 and take that past Dallas as far as Atlanta.
Then north again.
