Traveling to Las Vegas in January or February 2008. Where is the best hotel to stay at with the best deals.
We of course would like to see a few shows and probably the dam. Thanks, Dee

Since 9-11 you can't see as much of the dam anymore but it's still an awesome feat of engineering. Just about everything you could want is in Las Vegas. You can spend a lot or go cheap. Just depends on what's important to you.

I always stay downtown where it's cheap. I like to save my money for gambling and other fun things. I don't invest a lot for a room I won't spend any time in. Gambling odds are also better downtown than on the strip.

Wow there are a lot of choices...depends if you want the strip or downtown. I usually look online, then call and compare. Often, if you call the hotel directly, you can get a better deal and if you want to see a show at that particular hotel, they will try a little harder to accomodate you and your party.

Good Luck:-)

lots of condos in Vegas--many a block or so off the strip--usually less busy--can get a good deal if you book through something like vrbo...if you want the Vegas experience check out trip advisor--good recommendations from real people and they run the gamut--every hotel/every price range--recommendations for deals as well on the forum section...
we stayed at the Aladdin the last time -- not it is the hard rock--it was good location--close to the Paris and across from the Bellagio...rooms were ok but we are not players--had two doubles next to each other which was nice--we were travelign with our adult son and our best friend who had lost her husband last year--she and I took a room and husband and son took the other...

Is the El-cheapo Travel Lodge still in the middle of the strip?

If you can find a good price at the Venetian - the rooms are all-suites. Plus it's located so you can walk many places, avoiding the rip-off taxis and sitting in traffic. I used to laugh at it having visited the real Venice so many times, but really they spent the bucks and hired the artists there so it's not that cheesy.

We always stay at Luxor. Get on their email list and they'll send you deals for the upcoming months. We're paying $59 a night for 4 weekdays in Nov. Also a cheap taxi ride to/from the airport. Do not take a cab from that far out on the strip to Fremont Street. Quotes we got were around $20 before the expected tip.

Monorail starts in back of MGM a block down (and through the casino).

Las Vegas Monorail Map
Las Vegas Monorail Map

Here are brief descriptions of the three monorail systems in Las Vegas.

MGM - Sahara - With seven stations this system connects many of the major hotels along Las Vegas Boulevard. Fares range from $5 for one ride to $40 for a three day pass.
Mirage - Treasure Island - Connects the Mirage and Treasure Island hotels. Rides are free.
Mandalay Bay - Excalibur - Connects Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and Excalibur hotels. Rides are free.

Bus stop is across the street and down 1/2 block. Bus stop from downtown is right in front of Luxor. The new double decker buses are nice. You see a lot of interesting people on them.

Deuce Bus - One way ticket - $2. One day pass - $5. Mandalay Bay to Fremont Street (Downtown). Frequent stops.

We always do a one day pass.

Earlier comments are true. Betting limits are lower downtown, as are room rates. Be careful, though, friends that have stayed at hotels downtown say the rooms are not what you get at the newer casinos. No personal experience, just what I've been told.

Venetian, Bellagio have art on display. Costs $, but when we were there what was on display was well worth the $. When you walk into the Venetian Look Up! The ceiling art is impressive.

If you play slots the Megabucks are tied in to most casinos and you just ask where they are in the casino. A story: A few years ago we were playing BJ at The Fremont and asked about the Megabucks slots. The dealer told us that a man had won two days earlier, but he put in two coins instead of three. Instead of $12 million he won $280,000. Nice, but OUCH! I bet he still dreams about that one.

MEGA JACKPOTS
From $1.00 Megabucks (with jackpots that have gone higher than $30 million)

You will find two deck and single deck downtown if you play BJ.

We set up our Nov trip. Got all the tickets taken care of and are looking forward to it. A week after we have it all finished my wife's boss tells her they want to send for CPE in Vegas! She's there now - I'm flying out tomorrow for a week. Rough life sometimes...

Going to the Grand Canyon Saturday. 14 hour day. Bus trip so we aren't driving, just gawking. Might rent a car and go to the Valley of Fire Sunday.

Whatever you do, enjoy!

I suggest that you check Trip Advisor dot com and look at the ratings from Joe Average Guest......

That being said....The Four queens Downtown is the best.

Default Deals

Check the Excalibur, a middle of the road mega Hotel. Its convenient to the major casinos and big name shows, restaurants. They seem to always have a special. Don't stay at the cheapest place, stay at somewhere were convenience is worth it also.
