I've read Tuesdays. In reality, it can all be pretty random.
What I just do when I'm planning a vacation is just search +/- 3 days and find the best price. The actual day doesn't vary too often and very rarely do I see prices fluctuate daily. I have however seen prices go way up overnight.
What seems random is actually extremely complex. There is no guaranteed time to get a good fare, unfortunately. Much still has to do with supply/demand and seasonal variations. The best thing to do is look everyday and jump on something that is reasonable. The same principle exists with hotel prices. One hour a room can be $99 and the next $150, then back down for no appreciable reason.
