Most was from bonuses. For delta, we've gotten some referral bonuses too.

One thing we do to maximize earning is to utilize the AA shopping portal. For purchases we already were going to make, we've earned a ton of bonus miles. We also sign up for the dining programs, surveys, pretty much anything to earn extra.

If you were going to get a new one, I'd say it depends on where you live and fly out of, and try to get an airline card for that one first. If you are married or attached and both have good credit, for example, you can get the delta one when it offers 50k.. they usually offer a 10k referral (so if you want a link lemme know!) once you get the bonus, you can refer your spouse and get the 10k and they would get the 50. So on and so on.
Not married or attached...but I'm moving back to Atlanta very soon so I'm thinking a card for Delta (and maybe one for SouthWest?).

I did a quick search and didn't see a Delta card with a 50K bonus but I'll do some more digging this weekend.

I'll definitely take that referral link if you don't mind!

You just missed the big Delta bonus (75K at the end of the year if you hit spend requirements). I wouldn't rush with a Skymiles card until they've come out with a fresh offer for 2017.

I don't have kids, so that gives me the freedom to travel pretty much whenever I want. It's also a great way of saving money throughout the year. Traveling really doesn't cost me that much. I go to Europe every other year, and visit places in the US once or twice a year. My flights are usually paid for through miles or churning airline cards.

As of right now, I've got enough miles through Alaskan, American, and Delta to buy four round trip economy tickets to Europe.

I stay in hostels or Airbnb and only spend about $400 on the hostels and cheap food.

The last trip I paid out of pocket for cost me $800 (round trip airline) + $150 (food) + $100 (train/metro/other transit) + $250 (hostels), all for about two weeks. So $1300 total. Sometimes you can even find flights to Europe for under $500.

We just ran some projections for a two person 17 day trip to the UK this summer. Plane tickets and 12 of 15 hotel nights (red eye flight is night 16) will be covered out of points & miles stash. Out of pocket will be around $2500 for three non-points hotel nights, rental car, one week Tube pass, attraction admissions fees, UK departure taxes on the flights, and food of the chain pub and Starbucks variety.

So not a totally bare bones trip, and IMO, a pretty reasonable all-in international holiday for two.

I don't think anyone would argue that $1250 pp for 16 nights is very very inexpensive. (You only said UK so I'm not sure if London is included but if so, that's even cheaper than I thought.)

I need to look into cards that are good for hotel points.

I think that was a business card though. I just checked my Amex and I have a referral for the 50k offer which is the highest I've seen on it. If you Send me a message with your email address I'll happily send it to you. The offer I have is for 50k if you spend 2k in 3 months and a 50 dollar delta statement credit.

The 75K was not a business Amex, and the offer expired something like January 3. I'm guessing it was offered as indirect competition for that new Chase Sapphire that had the credit card bloggers all aflutter, and the 75K might only reappear if the competition puts out another very high value sign up bonus.

Six nights in London. It would be massively spending down my hotel point stash, but London's worth it to me, and after May 2018 when the primary mortgage is paid off, the household cash flow situation is going to allow for a lot more fun stuff.

I just did some checking and that was the one with super high annual fee. I didn't qualify for the CSR, way over the 5/24
