went to La Roma and the public beach at Bayahibe, it was dreadful

You can't beat St Thomas/St John. Though we went on the Celebrity Equinox and it was a blast. We stopped at a bunch of different ports (Belize, Costa Rica, Colombia). The food was fantastic. I would definitely go again.

Never been but as far as people I know who went there was no in between they either loved it or hated it

Went there with my wife a few years ago. I really can't tell you much about it because unbeknownst to us the beach there was very "european". I began my day by focusing on some freighter out at sea and never letting my eyes stray off its course. The alternative would have been deadly to me.
