Well, don't forget that's 13 business days, generally not including weekends. Most Americans probably take off a week at a time - so 5 work days. Maybe two weeks straight (10 work days) if they're lucky. Also keep in mind that wherever you got this 13 number from, it's probably an average, which means some people take more than 13, some take less. So no, it doesn't mean Americans never take vacations any longer than 13 days. There is no legal minimum that Americans are entitled to but even here in the UK where the minimum is 20 days (plus 8 bank holidays), you'd be hard pressed to find someone who could take all 20 days at once because including weekends, that would be nearly a month total. Most people take one, maybe two weeks (5-10 days) off at a time so I don't think Americans are unusual in that.

At the last workplace before our retirement, a quasi-official agency, we started off with 14 (business) days of vacation and capped at 25 days after 15 years of employment. In addition, we were allowed to carry the days over to the following years and take them altogether, as long as the leave was less than 38 business days. In addition to the vacation, we also had 11 legal holidays and 13 sick days. My husband and I usually took two trips to Europe or Australia each year for a bit longer than two weeks per trip, and saved the leftover days. Then, every other year, we would spend two months lying about on a beach in French Polynesia.

Our daughter can take as many days off work as she wishes, as long as there isn't a deadline to meet and she makes herself available to her clients and her firm when they need her. She rarely ever had a vacation during which she did not have to work via email or cell phone. So, when you're enjoying your café crème and croissant at an outside table in Paris, for instance, try not to show grimaces when you hear an American voice talking in his/her cell phone about some business matter. It's more than likely that person did not have much choice in the matter, for she/he is not allowed to leave work behind when taking his/her earned and deserved vacation.

For a number of years, I only travelled abroad in November, to take advantage of the 2 days that we got off for Thanksgiving. Using 8 vacation days, I could string together 14 calendar days. Lower airfare, no crowded tourist attractions, it wasn't bad. Cold though!

At first I took 10 calendar days, and then 14. But I don't know any of my colleagues, no matter how many vacation days they had, that took off more than 2 weeks. It just wasn't done!

It's one of the reasons I haven't been many places that's for sure. I get 2 weeks of vacation, 6 sick days, and 2 personal days. I currently live away from my family, so a lot of my vacation time goes to seeing my family. It's really crappy how little vacation most of us get, and I should be thankful because I know a lot of people who get a lot less than I do.

Many Americans haven't been outside the country but I don't think it is just because they have fewer days off. The USA is so large by itself and there are things for people to see in the USA.

Some Americans travel for longer periods in between jobs or while they are students during their summer vacations when they have more free time.
