And having done a similar trip, I'll just say 600-700 miles per day was too much for me this time around. Drive safely and enjoy the trip.
That's just really cool to know as i never knew these existed. However looking at their USA map they are only in Texas (austin) along my route I-10 so that won't help me on this trip but i'm glad i learned about these for future trips across the USA.

Yeap i know about Wal Marts but i'll have to see one along the Interstate as most are usually inside the interior of cities. I guess its where i'm at and how tired i am when the time arrives but i'll get a map and ponder where i think i'll be when i stop to rest.

Anyway thanks again as i will ponder everone's advice.......

Just curious if anyone has ever done that before with good or bad experiences.
not dangerous in a locked car. rest rooms are dangerous middle of the night.

This is how Michael Jordan's dad got killed too.

I'd make darn sure it's a well lit, well patroled place to stop. Otherwise, consider sleeping in the parking lot of a 24-hour grocery store (up near the front)

24-hour truck stop would be pretty good too.

Thanks guys for the safety concerns. I got this idea do to i visit relatives frequently in Southern New Mexico so i usually leave between 4.00 and 4.30 a.m. for the 3 hour drive and always go by an Rest Area about 45 miles away along the Interstate and i always noticed at that darken early time in the morning is lots of Truckers parked there sleeping and also Cars with U-hauls and other vehicles with people sleeping inside them.

Anyway i can always stay at a motel if i decide too but i just fume when i see that Motel 6 and others are $50 plus a night and with gasoline at $3 bucks a gallon driving 2,000 miles each way thats going to add up.

Anyway thanks again everyone !

Thanks Karla for ''Welcome Sign''....as you are just the nicest person on C-D.

I'm trying to get the Christmas Holidays off for that trip so i'm doing some pre planning right now if my employer can give me the time off as we are so shortstaffed right now so i hope it works out for that trip (gosh i miss jax beaches).

Can't beleive its going on 13 years (jan 95) since i left JAX as i know there's been lots of changes since then....

If you stop at local motels in small towns along your route, you should be able to keep your costs very low ($15-25). I stayed at places in California and Arkansas that were charging 10-15 dollars a night when I was driving cross-country. You may have to drive a couple of miles off of I-40 or I-10.

you left right after I moved here (92) you will not believe the changes and growth. I think you will be pleasantly surprised
I know you said you want to drive but between the hotels(do you really want to sleep in a rest stop)and gas it might be cheaper to fly check southwest. they fly out from Albuquerque, NM is that near where you are. depending on when you fly they had internet specials from $99

I don't know if you spend much time on the jax forum but maybe some of of us regulars
can all meet up with you for oh I don't know Pizza lol
