I am taking a long road trip of about 5000 miles in a few weeks. My car is quite capable of making the trip as it is a newer model and reliable. However, I wonder if renting a car and putting all those miles on it instead of my own car might be a good idea, saving my car from racking up miles on it.
You can get specials, even on premium cars, for fairly cheap for a couple of weeks. What do you think about putting long miles on a rental instead of your own car?

I recently went on a long weekend get-a-way w/ my husband and we rented a car. We ended up putting about 600 miles on the rental. I'm all for renting a car for road trips. Especially w/ the mileage you are talking about! My car is new (2012) but I didn't want to put that much extra mileage on it.

My car is eleven years old, so, yes, I prefer to rent.

@ $.20 a mile your car will depreciate $1,000

unless you're mileage is restricted by a lease there's no point in my opinion because 5,000 miles isn't much mileage for a car.

example 2 cars, 1 with 20k miles and the other with 25k miles = no real difference between the two.

there are other factors though which make it maybe a good idea as in tire treadwear, brakes, rock chips, etc.

I bought my car in part so I can take it on trips.

So, no, I wouldn't rent. Back when I had an unreliable car...that was another story.

I'd be wary of rentacar mileage charges and any rules about taking it out of state.

wow, do they have that kind of restrictions in Canada. Most of the companies here do not. Yes, you might find a few that do, but most are offering unlimited mileage and yes, you can take them out of the state. We only ran into a problem once (years ago) We often rent for long road trips. So do our kids.

Anytime I leave the state, I rent a car. Unless you were going to be gone for a long period of time (maybe over a week or two)...I think its better to not put all of those miles and wear & tear on your car... You do want it to work when you get back =)

I ALWAYS rent a car for any lengthy trip. We put 8K miles on a Hertz car last Fall doing Route 66. When you figure the Federal government uses $.50 a mile to calculate the cost of driving (tires, gas, wear, tear) it just doesn't make many sense to burn out your own car like that. That Federal figure is probably outdated, BTW.

Sure, done it a few times. We made the loop from Florida to Ohio, Pa, Jersey, and back to Florida in a rental. They were running a special with unlimited mileage, as long as you returned it to the same place, so it was super cheap and kept the wear and tear off of our cars. Plus, if it breaks down you call and say "Come get your car and bring me a new one."
