Questions about Delta Flights (plane, airport, best, carry-on)

I'm traveling from Bishop Airport to atlanta hartsfield airport today. When I first arrive I know I have to check in with delta. My questions is do I have to wait to go through the security checkpoints? Or can I go anytime and wait on my flight? My plane leaves at 5;48 I plan on arriving at the airport around 3:30pm.

You can go thru security as soon as you have a boarding pass

(either you get at the airport, or get when you check-in from home and print out you boarding pass).

If at all practical it is best to arrive with a boarding pass in hand. Second best is to use the machine check-in (if available).

I'm guessing Bishop is a small airport, if so things may be less time-consuming than a major airport. At a big airport check-in is often clogged with people who have baggage.

You will have to go through security even if you do online check in before arriving at the airport.

I usually go early enough to check in and go through security with time to spare just waiting to board in the terminal so I can stretch my legs or get a decent cup of coffee (Delta's coffee is the WORST, don't drink it!). I like the machine check-in if I'm only taking a carry-on but if I'm checking baggage I always go to the people-manned check-in. I've printed out my boarding passes before and I've seen people use the Delta app and have security scan their phones as their boarding pass. I haven't tried it myself though.

So you don't have to wait to go through security, just do it right after checking in. Have a fun flight!
