Certainly something I would love to do one day!

The only big negative I have heard is the sea ride over there is like nothing else. Huge waves, not for those who get seasick easily. Even though even if you do you are going to Antarctica so just deal with it.

From the US, it seems like just getting down to where you start, is half the trip. Not unlike going to Tahiti.

I spent several weeks in the Ross Island / McMurdo Naval Base area of Antarctica doing some scientific research years ago. We flew in so I can not comment on the ocean crossing.

However, the experience in Antarctica is amazing. Assuming you are going in the Antarctic summer (November - January) the sun is up pretty much the whole time. I woke up at 2:00 am on morning and it was sunny out. The air is clear and the land upspoiled (except near the base). I had a wild penguin come to within about 10 feet of me at one point. My research took my to one of the nearby mountain tops on the mainland. You could down one direction and see a long valley dropping 8,000 foot to the sea. Looking the other direction all you saw was ice, coming up to the top of the mountain. It was awesome.

As a bonus to the type of work I was doing, we had to do a two day survival class, sleeping outside in handmade shelters for one night. We got to rappel down ice cliffs and traverse crevasses. However, even with a top sleeping bag, sleeping in a dug out snow cave is dang cold!

If you have the chance to go and can afford the trip, I would highly recommend it. I would love to go back.

Actually I flew direct from Tahiti to Los Angeles several years ago. So I think that getting to Antarctica is definitely more complicated from everything that I have heard or seen about it. (I have watched some Globe Trekker episodes on traveling to Antarctica as well seen the Today show's Ann Curry's report on her trip to Antarctica some years ago.)
