I am wondering if anyone here has ever traveled to Antarctica and if so could give us details about their trip.

Did a cruise/land excursion a couple years ago on the Discovery, (literally the old Love Boat). It was a fabulous experience, though the trip is somewhat arduous: fly from US to Buenos Aires, couple days in BA, fly 4+ hrs south to Ushuaia, Argentina, aka Fin Del Mundo. Spend a day there, board the boat and chug out of Darwin Passage and across the dreaded Drake Passage for a day/night/day and arrive at the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Discovery does not run there anymore, but other ships do: ranging from small and rugged to the former Russian icebreakers and big bucks.

The land excursions, done in a Zodiac, are interesting, all of the ships have speakers/experts, and the experience is worth it, esp if one has the dough to spend on a trip of a lifetime, imo.

Trips are done in the Antarctic 'Summer', so sun barely sets and the daytime temps can be 40s+.

There will be little to no 'help' if something goes really awry, but we never feared for our safety even though the Drake Passage crossing was severe.

Go if one can: it is a remarkable experience that few of us get to do!
GL, mD

Many of us have probably done AK cruises: College Fjord, Glacier Bay, et al.
Take that experience and 'views' and experience, multiply by about a factor of 10X, and that is a cruise to Antarctica, imo.

For those interested, a handful pack of photo 'sets', from my Flickr page, of our Antarctica trip:
Thanks for looking!

Antarctica sounds like a great trip, and I hope to do it sometime. However it is on the pricey side- the ones I see start at 10K/ person- so you might want to look into Norway, Greenland, Spitzbergen etc. cruises as a possible more moderate alternative.
