Has anyone here crossed the Panama Canal by boat/ship? If so what was it like and was it a worthwhile experience?

If you visit Panama on vacation, you can do a partial or full transit. We chose not to do that. It takes a long time and you can see everything without doing that. We stayed at the Gamboa resort on the river Chagres. (Its flows into the Lake at the center of the Panama Canal.)

We took a boat trip from the resort into the Lake Gatun and traveled beside huge container ships. We saw lots of wildlife in the forested areas of the lake, and saw them dredging. Very cool!

On another day we went on their rainforest tram and saw the entire region from up above. You can see the river, lake, and canal.

Then we drove all the way to the locks in Northern Panama to see the ships go through the locks. (We got better pictures there because it is higher up than the locks closer to the Gamboa.) We drove across the canal and got tons of cool photos. I would only recommend this last activity to people who speak Spanish and are comfortable traveling in Central America. The closer locks are just fine for 99.99% of people. (My husband is an avid photographer and we travel in central America often independently.)

Panama is a beautiful country that is full of natural beauty, friendly people, and the amazing canal. Loved it!

We traversed the Panama Canal a few years ago on the Princess Cruise Line. WE went from East to West and thoroughly enjoyed the whole route. Would do it again.
