The most dangerous/scary part about visiting Vietnam is the traffic - especially in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. Crossing the road feels like you're putting your life in the hands of the motorists, hundreds of roaring motorcycles. The only way to cross the broad avenues that seem like gauntlets is just to walk in front of the traffic and hope they weave around you, which they usually do. Being on the back of a motorbike is just as hair-raising.
Other than that Vietnam is pretty safe: crime is low, malaria is restricted mostly to rural inland areas (though there's dengue.etc), the food is generally actually quite safe to eat and most Vietnamese actually seem to quite like Americans and western things. McDonald's is entering the Vietnamese market in early 2014.

When I was in Beijing, I don't believe I ever had the guts to cross the street. We toured the town by just going straight and making left turns.
Ho Chi Minh City is just as bad, but the people will drive around you if you stroll across the street.
Well everyone's idea of dangerous is a little different. I know there are certain places I'd visit and wouldn't worry too much and people would think I'm an idiot; but also places that I would never visit that other people would.
A lot depends on the person's connection to a country and their interests. You wouldn't see me going to Honduras, because it's way too dangerous and I don't have any interest in going. However, I would take a trip to Rio de Janeiro because it has always been a personal goal for me to see it.
