I just did my first one 2-3 weeks ago, and I'm as excited as a little kid to do my next one, next month.

I did it in Los Angeles, got my $5 Tap card, rode the public bus from the Airport, and took 2 routes to east Los Angeles, and 2 to west Los Angeles. What fun, and to think of all that I saw on those long bus trips. Something grabs your interest, en route, hop off, and another one comes by 15-20 minutes later. They even have TV screens on the public buses with 24 hour news. How nice!

Next trip! South L.A., all done by public buses.

I've ridden all the light rail lines in a number of cities, yes they're enjoyable, but public buses will get your places the rails won't.

And after L.A., what city shall I tackle next!!!

Ever tempted to do a trip like this?

Do not bother with Anchorage, AK. The city bus system there leaves a lot to be desired.

Washington DC--fly into Reagan--take the Metro=ok not technically a bus--but public transport--takes you close to all of the major sites---one day isn't enough time though. You can hop bus for sites farther away though.

We did that once in Mexico when we went to see the floating gardens at Xochimilco. It was interesting, to say the least but it was also a bit dangerous because we were so obviously tourists and were therefore "marked" by two young men who attempted to relieve us of our possessions just after we boarded the bus. It was an interesting experience.

We've done that in LA/Santa Monica and Minneapolis. We're planning to do similar when we go to Chicago. It feels much more freeing than trying to deal with a car in an unfamiliar city!

I'm kinda baffled that taking the bus in an unknown city is seen as unusual on here

I agree...is that really so unusual to travel somewhere and use public transportation?

I think outside the USA it is not unusual at all to get around by public transportation and by buses in particular especially when one is on vacation.
