Exactly.

But when folks don't speak English, attempts are made to bridge this communication gap.

France is not an English speaking country. In Paris, many do not attempt to bridge this gap. Outside of Paris, this is not as much of a problem.

As to everyone speaking English in the U.S., apparently you've never been in line behind someone who only speaks Spanish. I have several times just within the past week. I have seen clerks struggle to understand and help out. Sometimes, they will call someone over who speaks Spanish to assist. I have never observed rude, haughty behavior from retail clerks or wait staff.

Most places, if you are making an attempt to speak the language, they'll try to meet you halfway. Many in Paris do as well. Many do not. Except for the Louvre, I probably would never go back. Too many other places to visit where people are more welcoming.
No I haven't. Haven't lived there since 2000 and when I go back to visit it's to Michigan. Visited Florida but not since 2004 and that was to the SW coast.

Perhaps others have had a more pleasant experience than ours and will post about what a wonderful time they had in Montreal, how friendly and accommodating the locals were.
I really enjoyed Montreal and found that the people there had no problem speaking English. I heard that in Quebec City, people got snooty if you didn't speak French.

I had to think hard about this one, because nearly every place I've been to I enjoyed so much I would love to go back for a second, third, fourth, or fifth visit!!!

Possibly the one country I was satisfied seeing just once ... for a three week stay, much longer than most tourists stay ... is Sri Lanka. Very nice place, but I am satisfied I saw everything worth seeing there.

There's no legally official language in the US, not even English.

On your visit to Florida I suspect you'll come to find out just how many people here speak Spanish, some as their only language.
