Always pay for your vacation with a credit card. It gives you all sorts of protections. Then pay off the charge when you get home. If you don't pay it off in one lump sum, you lose whatever discounts and savings you had. If there are any disputes, the card company will fight them for you. Be sure to let the card company know that you are going overseas or they may put a daily limit or stop on purchases. Use it to make all purchases (if you can) as you will get the best exchange rate. Use a debit card at ATM's overseas for cash as they are everywhere. There may be a daily limit on your debit card but I usually do it the first two days there and it's usually enough for spending for the trip.

Save money in advance for it. I have a specific online savings account to put money aside for vacations.

I put as much on the card as I can for protections and points, then pay it all off with the saved money.
