What is the best route from Dallas to Los Angeles ?
I have used Microsoft Streets and Trips software and the soutern route (I-20 and I-10) was the shortest, but the northern route (I-40) was only 7 miles longer.

Any comments on the best car rental ?

Price out the one way cost of of a plane ticket on a discount carrier like Southwest. It could end up being cheaper to do that and rent in LA instead of getting charged with a hefty one way drop off fee for a car rental.

I don't think that is what the op asked us. He/she may have a reason to be driving.

We took the 1-20/1-10 route. The northern route might only be a few miles further and might actually be a prettier route. Of course cutting across Texas isn't pretty period.
