I personally wouldn't know how to accomplish moving to a different state and getting a driver's license in a different name, but I suppose there are tricks to that too. Opening a bank account would be a huge problem (as opposed to 30 or 40 years ago) because the Patriot Act has put very stringent requirements on banks concerning verification of customers' identities. So much so that I have had new accounts rejected based on my having placed freezes on the credit bureau reports; I was able to open the new accounts after jumping through additional hoops. (And I hasten to note that I have had a stable history of relatively long-term addresses and have lived in Southern California since 1966).

So maybe the "solution" is to use public transit and not have a drivers license and get money orders at the post office to pay any bills which can't be paid with cash (i.e., not have a bank account at all). But even most employment is a problem because employers too have verification of identity requirements. So maybe add under-the-table employment? Lots of problems to solve, but perhaps doable for a determined and knowledgeable individual.
If they can catch the unabomber they can catch some random dude asking a public internet forum how to dissappear.

That's quite true, but there is also the issue of how badly they want to catch someone, which determines the amount of resources that will be devoted to the search. The Unabomber had committed murder and was a high-profile criminal. If the OP just owes $500 to some thug it is doubtful the thug will have the same level of resources.

I think the best way to disappear is put your payments on auto, make sure all your bills are being paid -- no one comes looking for you then.

You can relocate to another city -- and then just stop emailing or writing or calling people back home. They'll quit caring after a while.
Michigan woman was found dead after 5 years. Auto payments kept everyone in the dark.

Woman's auto-payments hid her death for over 5 years - CNN.com

There was a C-D thread on this. Early on, one of the neighbors called the police who didn't find anything. None of her relatives seemed to question her disappearance at all.

Of course, once her body was found, the relatives are all interested. Alas, the money was eaten up in the auto payments.

That was not a condition posited by the OP.

No, I'm still here. And no, I am not running from the law. I am running from something much worse.... my family!

They are pressuring me to do stuff I don't want to do. Plus I don't get along with my brother's wife. I am feeling so overwhelmed that I just want to disappear forever.

Ok, so don't move. Just change your phone number or move out of your parents' house

I find my family much more enjoyable since I move a couple thousand miles away. Between time zone differences and my schedule I give them a call once a week for a nice chat and visit for a couple days every year. I love them but find that distance is better for my relationship with them.

If you are unable to set boundaries with them and they are unable to respect your boundaries them maybe some distance is a good thing. Disappearing may be a bit extreme, but I understand where you're coming from. You may want to post in the relationship forum for some more perspective.

In that case, what you need is either a counselor or a lawyer, depending on whether the 'things' are illegal or the pressure involves your kneecaps.

So move to Uruguay and don't return any emails or phone calls.
