I paid $3 for a room outside of Namche Bazaar in Nepal, on the way to Everest. It was about 6' x 8' with plywood walls. Mattress only - need your own sleeping bag. Toilet was an outhouse.
My wife and I stayed on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan, south of Tulum. Our room had sand floor, candles for lighting. No bathroom. But it was right on the beach (hence the sand floor). We paid I think $15 in 2001. Rooms now go for $200 there.
While it's not the cheapest, the best value I received was a $55/night stay at the Westin in Cincinnati courtesy of Priceline. Westin service and amenities at Motel 6 prices. Hard to beat.
edit: I should note that this was about 7-8 years ago and Westin must no longer participate with Priceline.

$2.50 and it included breakfast. It was the Umbagog Hotel on the north shore of Umbagog Lake in Maine. Of course this was in 1958, but the ham and eggs were great. The old hotel is gone now. I think it caved in under the snow load one winter.
Back when Brazil was using the cruzeiro I stayed two nights in a five star hotel on the beach in Rio before I flew out. When I had to pay for the room the clerk quoted some big number in the 1,000 if not 100,000. I had just dumped all my cruzeiros so I asked him how much in American? He got out his calculator and said $40.00
There are great cheap rooms all over the place. I worked for a company that had me traveling in 47 states for a flat fee so I tried to stay as cheaply as I could. The mom and pop places are the best. There was one in Durango I stayed at for $28.00 years ago. In 2012 I stayed there again and it seemed to be still very reasonable and a relatively short walk to get coffee.

I stayed at a Sheraton while at Hershey Park for $38. Indoor/outdoor pool, pool bar, restauraunt inside, room service, and a really nice room. It was off Hotwire. I've gotten great places like that cheap off Hotwire , you just don't know what you're getting til you pay.
I paid $24 to stay at the Ace Hotel Palm Springs as some sort of promotion from Hotels.com.
