Not a bad idea. I don't have a car though. I'd have to travel with someone.

Look on Orbitz or Expedia for flight and hotel packages. Sometimes if you book directly with the hotel you get a better discount.

I looked up the travel dates and flights to Tokyo are 1600 out of JFK. For 1200 you can fly to Seoul, Korea.

Me personally, I'd save on air fare and fly to South America. During the dates you're looking at, I wouldn't recommend Chile or Argentina because it can get pretty cold! Colombia is always a cool country to visit, and from New York you could easily find a good deal on a flight. Travelling around Colombia is also quite cheap.

Tel Aviv is very cosmopolitan (like a mini-Manhattan/NYC) so everyone fits in there.

Berlin? I can find a ticket for those dates using ITA Matrix's software for $1100. Cool, eclectic city where English is widely spoken and there's going to be some interesting shopping.

On what website did you see flights to tokyo for 1600? Were they round-trip non-stop? I've never taken a non-stop flight before so I wanted to save time and hassle (assuming there is some).

I've never been to Colombia before. Are they friendly towards blacks there?

Try this useful tool:

https://www.google.com/flights/#sear...014-09-04;mc=m

Enter your departure airport, leave destination blank, put in the dates you have in mind, and wait for the map to fill in with fares. Change the dates and see if anything pops up cheaper. Less than $600 to Colombia. Ecuador or Peru, from JFK in mid August for three weeks. You're right, Tokyo is nearly $2000, nut other destinations in southeast Asia are under $1300, and all over Africa for under $1200.

You can also get something similar in list format with Skyscanner by typing in 'Everywhere' as your destination.

Cheap Flights - Compare Airline Tickets with Skyscanner.com

I'll note that time of year is peak Atlantic hurricane season, so if you want Caribbean, go pretty far south to some place like Aruba (about $500 on Avianca coming back on Sept. 1) where bad weather is less common.

If you're willing to do a one stop out of Newark, they're showing NYC-Tokyo Narita with a layover in Hong Kong for about $1400 for August 19-September 1 on Cathay Pacific. (The Aeroflot option is slightly cheaper, but would involve connecting through Moscow.)

What do people generally do during layovers/while waiting for the next flight? I'm extremely meticulous. My apologies
