I've yet to experience a long-distance Amtrak ride, so I do NOT speak from experience, but like I said before one of the appealing factors for me would be being able to have unlimited under 24-hour stopovers for free. Granted, the options are limited as many lines do not have more than one train a day, but there are also many interesting routes that do.

Still, in general I side with the folks that would rather take the least amount of time to get to a destination. I usually pay up to $100 more to fly direct instead of connecting, so you can see where my priorities lie.

I remember reading a funny article on a passenger's experience on the train from Minneapolis to Chicago. Lots of weird characters, but overall a good experience.

One of the reasons people take trains in the U.S. is for scenic purposes. I've heard out west that there are beautiful vistas that can only be experienced by train.
