I don't know because it is always dependent on the city. I'm pretty good at finding hotel deals and discounts, so I would say I almost always stay in a 3 star hotel or better and typically under the average price for the area.
I pass up hotels at either end of the spectrum, too expensive, or too cheap. I want a clean, comfortable room, and I'd say that usually ends up in the $110-$130/night range. I'm willing to pay more for a vacation location.
Depends where I am. Some places it is $120. Other places it is $80. Where I currently live any motel going for $40 is rather shady looking with a parking lot full of broke down cars.

In the USA, I consider $40 borderline, but usually wind up in the 40s, especially with the punitive taxes that are added (people who pay that special tax don't get to vote on it, so is taxation without representation.) I don't like to go much above that. I'd probably aim for $40-50 in Europe, too, but somewhat less in eastern Europe. In the third world, I try to find something near $10, but an occasional $20 would be tolerable.
$40??? Are you asking about hotels in the United States? I live in Houston, only a couple of hours away from you. TX is one of the cheapest places to live in the US, and even hotels that cheap here are few and far between. If I could get one that cheap, it's one where I wouldn't want to touch anything. Heck, I wouldn't want to even BREATHE in the place. I generally look for places around $80-90. I'm a big fan of B&Bs, and always look at customer reviews. I definitely want to stay below $150, no matter where I go. If the hotel costs more than that, I wouldn't want to travel to that city at all. It makes little sense for me to go into big time debt and have financial stress on what should be a fun trip.

Depends on where I'm going of course. I try to keep as low as possible as I'm only going to be there 7-8 hrs at most sleeping.
Just give me a bed and a shower. If I'm going somewhere I wouldn't want to waste time being in a hotel room. I will pay extra for location to cut down on transit time or if I'm going to go out and have fun and avoid driving.
Your opinion. The idea of staying in a private home with who knows what type of cleanliness standards, sharing a bathroom, and ahving little to no privacy doesn't appeal. Renting a flat is one thing, sleeping on someone's sofa or on an air mattress in a curtained off section of the living room=no bueno. I'd rather stay home.
$200 for expensive cities; about $125 elsewhere is the goal, but will nudge that up a little if need be.
