I can't stand sitting in the passenger seat with anyone driving. I feel I have no control and keep offering suggestions as to where to turn, how to drive, etc.

I make my wife drive her car a lot. She sometimes complains but I commute more than her and kind of like to take a break from driving when we are driving together.

Why does the man of the family usually drive? .
It's been customary since the first car was made. Just like it's been customary for women to have the car door opened for them

I guess I buck the trend because I'm the one who does all (at least the majority let's say 90%) of the driving when we go on long trips. My husband doesn't have the stamina for long trips but I love long distance driving.

many reasons:
YMMV
  • Men are often very bossy 'back seat drivers' (his lady might not appreciate his 'Guidance')
  • Men are usually more nervous and want to be in control. (why are you going this way?)
  • Men are more driven (speed this thing up)
  • Men are not always equipped to keep the kids quiet and fed.
  • Gives them a 'sense of responsibility' / warrior / hero (except when they get lost or make a wrong turn)
  • The men are usually the 'fix-it- guys' who can better recognize and diagnose a mechanical irregularity (not always...)

Lady might want to be 'courted' / treated special... thus if she likes to drive... SHUT up and let her.
If she feels more special being driven, then shut up and LISTEN!

And don't drive like a maniac.
Enjoy the moment, it may be your last.

I had an uncle who let my aunt drive, but he was the exception.

With us whomever feels like driving drives, no big deal, no macho custom or desire to be pampered.
It is not something that is given a lot of thought really. Basically whomever grabs the keys is the one who drives.

When I was growing up my dad did most of the driving. However my mom was a good driver. One place we lived my mom had to drive 16 miles each way to work, often under rather nasty winter conditions.

Many of my friends had to beg to get their dad to let them get their drivers license and drive the family car. My dad made it very clear with me that I had better get my license when I turned 16 as he was tired of driving.

My dad drives when the whole family is going somewhere, or if him and my mom are going somewhere. When me and my mom are going somewhere, I drive. I'm 21 and a guy, by the way.

Me and my dad enjoy to drive more than my mom, plus she has the longest commute. So we give her a break when possible.

In Saudi Arabia women are not allowed to drive. So I would say in general the custom is more for men to traditionally drive as the driver is the one in control of the car.
