Ironically (especially considering OP's original post above was from 2014)...my best excursion ever is the exact same one OP posted. Did a "no doors" helicopter tour of the same area in Kauai last summer. Scared me to death but overall was worth it for the views and footage/photos alone.

Has anyone been to the Mayan Ruins in Progreso? We are going cruising this summer and my daughter wants to book an excursion there.

A tour of Tavel wineries, who make some of the best roses in the world, using this company: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...te_d_Azur.html

Or maybe a chauffeured private tour of the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento to Amalfi with a fantastic lunch high above Positano.

Or perhaps a catamaran excursion off the coast of Antigua with perfect weather, tasty drinks, lobster on the grill and time at two great swimming beaches.

No "best", just great memories all.

I've found that taking a cooking class/school specializing in the local cuisine is a nice way to get off wandering around the sights & interact with a friendly local plus other curious travelers who can make for interesting companions even after the class. A good class should include a bit of local history vis a vis the cuisine & often can include a shopping trip to a local green market & at least one meal as a group that you made yourself, if you are in a wine region that could be included in the meal.

Can't choose between two -

Went on an excursion from San Francisco to Yosemite NP. The driver of the minibus loved visiting Yosemite, and shared his enthusiasm with us.

A friend and I went on a whale-watching trip from Anacortes WA. Sailed through the San Juan Islands in search of whales, and the captain told us that he wasn't going back until he'd found some. We ended up seeing a school of whales off Victoria BC. A truly memorable day out.

I have done this twice but the adventure tour for Vallarta Adventures - horse back riding, then rapelling down a waterfall, swimming in a creek, and taking a water slide. Just outside PV Mexico

A half day excursion might have been recent tour of Giza Pyramids just outside Cairo Amazing to see something standing that is 5,000 years old as well as walking inside some of the tombs.

Do it.

The history and structures at Mayan/Aztec/Inca/etc. sites is always interesting, and it doesn't get any easier than a tour excursion. You'll get to the see some of the country pass by along the way, get some great pictures, and hopefully learn about about New World indigenous cultures.
