Do these deals exist? I'm thinking of flying back home tomorrow and from my understanding, tickets are much more expensive if you book closer to the date. In my case, in about 24 hours! Is there a cheap way to get last minute flights??? I heard of the "stand-by" rule, has anyone tried?

I have never flown stand-by so I do not know how willing the airlines are to discount prices at the last minute. Do keep in mind that you run the risk of not getting a seat when on stand-by. Just about every flight I have been on this past year has been to the last seat completely full. Also, unless you are top tier with the airlines loyalty program you may find yourself mired at the bottom of the stand-by list. You may get to the top of the stand-by list only to get bumped back down by someone with higher status than you.

You might check with a reputable travel agency to see if they can locate any last minute deals. Something as simple as flying to an airport 20 miles away from the airport you were planning on might save you 50 percent or more.

I think that standby flights are only available to passengers with tickets in hand in advance (except airline employees that can fly standby without booking in advance) these days.

Many/most airlines do at least occasionally have last minute weekend special deals when they've got excess seat inventory unlikely to be filled by last minute business flyers. But they dictate the sale dates and routes, not the consumer.

If you're still interested, most airlines do have e-mail lists you can subscribe to if you're interested.
