Additionally I don't want to deal with baggage period.
I don't either. 90% of my trips don't involve a checked in baggage. A 20 inch carry on is good enough for me for a 7-10 day international trip. Waiting for a baggage is extremely annoying. I fail to understand why people bring two large luggage bags for a two week trip.
As to thefts, it is not more often than anywhere else, such as subways and the malls.

No need to buy a special bag for liquids - just use a 1-quart ziploc bag. 30 ml of liquid makeup is fine as long as it fits in your 1 quart bag along with all other liquids. The max size for a single container is 3 oz (or 100 ml). For a month long trip, I would only pack toiletries and cosmetics that are expensive or hard to find, then just buy everything else when you get there.
Don't buy clothes and ship home - that is a huge waste of money. Does your friend have a washer/dryer or access to a laundromat? You're far better off carrying clothes and doing laundry. You can fit lots of clothes in a standard carry on bag, and it doesn't take any more effort to get a bag full of clothes through TSA than it takes to just get yourself through.
Dress for the airport/security - minimal metal in clothing, no unnecessary jewelry or accessories, shoes that are easy to slip on/off, socks so you aren't standing around barefoot... Once the TSA officer checks your boarding pass and ID, put them in your bag to go through the x-ray. Don't put them in your pocket or hold them in your hand when you go through the scanner - it will cause an alert that leads to additional screening. There are always benches just beyond the security check point. Once you get through the scanner, pick up your things from the x-ray belt and move to the benches to put your shoes on and put liquids and/or laptop back in your bag. Don't stand in front of the x-ray belt while you repack, that just holds up the line for everyone else.
Look over the list of TSA permitted items - Prohibited Items | Transportation Security Administration. Most items are things you would never think to bring on a plane anyway, but it's better to know that to be caught by surprise.
Why did you decide to stop flying after 9-11? Because you were worried about being profiled? That still happens. You may be wanded and your carryon hand searched but it usually goes quickly.

The maximum size for a single container is 100 ml. That's a little bit more than 3 oz (3.38). This is worth a separate mention because some liquid containers, such as anti-perspirants, are 100 ml. But people think they can't take them with because they are clearly labeled as 3.3 oz.
