I've been seriously considering doing a road trip from my place in Arizona to my parent's place in northern Michigan, following Route 66, in my 1962 IH Scout. Similar to one of these -

Mine however will be modified with modern drivetrain parts, so it will be perfectly capable of safely travelling at freeway speeds, stopping, steering, etc.

Obviously I can't make the trip in a single shot (I've made this drive about a dozen times now on the interstates and tried the last time I came back in a newer Camaro...I mentally crashed out around the 30 hour mark, and it's 36 hours minimum of drive time...) so I've been thinking about my various options for overnight sleeps as I'm not wild about the idea of leaving the truck unattended in a parking lot over night, regardless of whether it's a Mariott or Motel 6.

With the small size of the truck, sleeping inside isn't really an option. While sleeping under the stars on the roof sounds fun, I know from prior experience with a motorcycle trip that I can't count on the weather always cooperating. I was considering packing a small backpacking style tent, and finding an out of the way place to camp for a night, then I stumbled on a website for the Blue Swallow Motel ( Blue Swallow Motel | A Unique Experience out of Another Time ) that said they have motel rooms with attached garages. A little more Googling, and I found another place in Vega, TX that also appears to have garages. Holy crap! Perfect solution!

Is this a somewhat common thing for Route 66 motels, or even other places? Specifically these individual garages, as opposed to something like an underground parking garage for the high end hotels. The kind of common where I could make random stops whenever I feel like stopping for the night? I'd prefer not to attached to a schedule, but not as much as I'd prefer not to leave the truck unattended :P

I have pretty much done highway 66 and now 40/adjacent to 66 and never seen any motels/ hotels with garages. We did 66 several times when I was a child and a teen. As an adult we have driven from CA to NM several times and NM to AR: never seen anyplace with garages.

I saw two motels with garages in the St. Louis metro area but that was in the late '80s and they were in an area that was developing. I really doubt if either survived and if they did, they long since closed.

The garages were popular with the gangsters as it allowed a better hangout along Rt. 66.

Here is a picture of the Coral Court Motel located on Watson Rd. outside of St. Louis that featured garages:
