Edward Heaton had a business meeting at the five star Wellesley Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. It was hot they opted to sit outside on the cigar terrace of the Crystal Bar, and order three small bottles of San Pellegrino sparkling water. After the meeting concluded, and Mr. Heaton requested the bill, imagine his surprise, when the total came out to $127
He was in a restaurant having a business meeting. They have a per person minimum after a certain hour to keep people (like the person the article was about) from taking tables when there are customers waiting--this place has a beautiful view.
This is very common in many nice restaurants and lounges with views. The problem with this place was that the minimum was never explained to the guest in advance. In my opinion, the situation was caused by poor communication on the part of the restaurant. When all they ordered was the three waters, the server should have politely mentioned the minimum, and asked if they would like to either order some food or perhaps she could assist them in moving to a different spot in the hotel with no minimum. Instead they were never advised. Very poor form by the restaurant, and I hope he contests it on his AmEx.

Exactly. Any hotel or restaurant that pulls this kind of nonsense without adequate warning on the menu and by the wait staff should not have four or five star status. The behavior of the staff and how policies are implemented should be part of the criteria for how many stars an establishment should be awarded. That place shouldn't even be a one star. I have no problem with the policy or prices, just the lack of notice to the customers.
