I need to travel for Xmas and I know the dates/times I need. Will prices be cheaper this far out or should I wait until October to buy? I know the general rule is 8 wks but what is the rule if its around a holiday?

Usually I can fly any day 24/7 for about $150 round trip on this route (and can sometimes get as low as $130), but the tickets are going for about $200 now.

There really isn't a general rule anymore. Everyone will have a different opinion of when it may be cheaper, and they may or may not be correct. Airfare is pretty unpredictable these days. I would use a fare tracker (Hipmunk is one example) and keep an eye on the price.

The fare tracker idea is good, but I also think you should just wait longer in general. What is this route BTW? That might help to know. A couple months beforehand is usually the best and I have noticed that if you look too long in advance, the prices could he just as intense as buying the night before.

Price aside, at least if you book now you may have more chance of getting the flights that you want and you can work around those known times and dates.

Check Bing's Price Predictor. Other than that there are a lot of factors to take into account.

In my experience, the best prices are on Mondays and Tuesdays between 9:00pm and Midnight.

Bing Travel's airfare price predictor is gone, but not forgotten

My MIL once complained to my husband that it was April and he had not booked her xmas tickets to visit us yet.

I don't think it worked correctly for me once. Unfortunately.

Overall airfares are going up. What a typical fare was last week or last Christmas is no indicator of what it would be this year. Personally I'd buy it now. waiting to save $50 is like cutting off your nose to spite your face--it could likely go to $400 without warning. Are you willing to take that chance?
