Distance from State College to Philly- 193 miles

Distance from London to Paris by air- 215 miles

Distance from Eureka, CA to San Francisco- 272 miles

As someone in a small metro area served only by domestic airlines, I'm still very much I'm glad I'm 20 minutes from an airport served by them instead of having to drive 3.5 hours one way to pick up a flight from a Virgin or Jet Blue out of New Orleans. Same as with train travel, lower population densities in the USA make for a different long haul mass transportation scenario. And if you aren't big on thoroughly mediocre airline food and BAs token mystery wrap, I don't see a ton of difference between a Delta flight between VPS and Atlanta and a BA or KLM cityhopper flight intra-Europe.

But then I suspect Delta operations has a soft spot for my area (or at least their ops center in Atlanta wants it to be nice when they grab an open seat for a quick beach weekend) because the Florida panhandle routes seem to get nicer planes and better flight attendants than a lot of their other short haul second tier routes. I've come to like the 717 quite a bit for short haul.

Agreed. I used to live in a place only serviced by regional jets, but it quite often was better than driving to a larger airport.

If I drove and wanted to leave early in the morning, I would have to go the night before and pay for hotel, gas and food. With a regional carrier, I could leave early and only pay the very cheap airport parking ($2.50 a day).

I could have driven to the bigger airport and flown early in the morning, in fact I did that a couple of times, but parking there was about $30 a day which canceled out any savings, plus a tank of gas and having to worry about big city traffic.
