Hi,

I'm flying with United from Europe to the US tomorrow and I have a question regarding the carry-on baggage policies.

It says you can bring a Carry-on bag and a Personal item (... your personal item, such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or other small item...).

Now, I'll be travelling with my brother.
1. I have a backpack with my photography gear.
2. My brother will have a backpack with the documents, etc.
Can he take with him a laptop bag? Can I take a shoulder bag?

Because according to their description a laptop bag (and a shoulder bag) is a Personal Item. And so is a backpack.
So that would mean we have two personal items each... not good.

Or in this case, will the backpack be considered a carry-on bag and the laptop bag (and shoulder bag) a personal item?

I had a colleague who had a backpack as well as a small handbag which she was able to board a United Airline flight with (as all the rest of her baggage was checked-in).

As long as you have two items that are the size allotted or SMALLER you'll be fine.

Keep in mind that when they say backpack, they are talking about the smaller day packs like people use for book bags and laptop bags, not the large ones that hikers use for a two week trail adventure.

Basically the small personal item needs to fit under the seat in front of you.

Give what you are talking about, you'll have no problem.

Eh- what they care about is that if you bring two items into the cabin, one of them fits under the seat in front of you, and only one of them goes into the bin. The gate agent will actually be happy to see someone with two smaller bags that they don't have to worry about fitting the sizer instead of having to tell the person headed to Europe for three months with a giant duffel bag that, yes, it's too big and they need to gate check it now.

Okay, thanks everyone! It's reassuring.

So we'll have one backpack each (regular size), a laptop bag and a tiny shoulder bag that will carry our wallets and passeports. We can even put it in the backpack if needed. All is good.
