When I make this trip it's usually for 2-3 days total, so I really need a legacy with interline agreements. Plus I hate being nickel and dimed.

All winter, most of the CHI-PHX were in the $380-450RT range. The website identified a $205RT on US Air. I like it for some of the ideas it generates.

For those with flexibility, airfarewatchdog.com is the bomb!

But even they can't produce miracles - like a <$350 RT fare for RDU-LV. They send me some terrific fares for RDU-PHX, but you have to jump on them quickly,

The crazy thing is that sometimes I find sub-$300 fares using Matrix on the same day that Airfare watchdog is sending me fares in the $450 range for the same trip. I'm currently sitting on $150 in travel funds from US due to a series of mechanical delays that caused a forced overnight a few weeks ago. Hoping to find a sub-$300 ticket between now and the end of the year for a final LA weekend that will run me under $300 including my rental car, airport parking, and a couple dinners out with friends.

I also like to look at KAYAK - Cheap Flights, Hotels, Airline Tickets, Cheap Tickets, Cheap Travel Deals - Compare Hundreds of Travel Sites At Once to compare fares.

I have tried Kayak but I have never found anything on Kayak that I have not found on Orbits or Travelocity.

Actually the dispute has been resolved and they won't be doing so as of two or three days ago.

Kayak is not an online travel agent like Orbitz or Travelocity, it's just a search tool. It compares various offers and will link you to airline-specific sites for booking or give you the option to book through an agent if that's your preference. I personally stay away form agents because they have their own policies which can make things really confusing if your plans change. Best to deal directly wight he airlines whenever possible, IMO.

Still, I see no real benefit to using Kayak. I have tried I several times with no real benefit.

Because it compares prices for you without requiring you to go through an agent or otherwise sign up for any services. And then you're free to book directly through whomever you want… It's not going to give you better prices than any other places because it's not a discount travel site. It just lets you compare many travel sites at once to find the best deals faster.

But I'm not trying to talk you into anything… by all means just use what works for you.
