Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge Tennessee. I had first gone there years ago when they were fairly sleepy little towns at the entrance to the beautiful Smoky Mountains. Through the years, the tackiness quotient had increased, but it was tolerable, & enjoyable in a kitschy way.
We went back a couple of years ago--wow! Pigeon Forge has huge "theaters" lining the roads--HATFIELDS & MCCOYS!, LUMBERJACKS!, etc. And while Gatlinburg has has the ubiquitous Ripley's Museum for years, the town now seems to exist only for the purpose of selling nothing but FUDGE! & OLD TIMEY PHOTOS!. And the sidewalks are packed with hordes of fat, t-shirted zombies stumbling towards more Fudge Shoppes.
It was really sad. We couldn't get into the park fast enough!
The crowds there are nuts! My husband calls it Hill Billy Vegas. It's pretty cheesy. The GSMP on the other hand is lovely.
I'd say those fakey horse and buggy towns in East Central Pennsylvania were way over the top...like anyone really dresses like that anymore...bwahahahaha....I don't know how many times I must've heard; "hey der English, please remove your hand from my wife's a$$" OK, whatever you say, Jebediah!
Nice way to insult people! I don't live in PA, but in my area there thousands of Amish and Mennonites. They really do drive a horse and buggy. They also dress very old fashioned and simple. Many speak Pennsylvania Dutch....a variation of German. These are REAL people.
I mean it's one thing to have a church built over what may or may not have been Jesus' birthplace is one thing. But when we saw one shrine marking what was supposedly the exact spot at which Mary gave birth and another, four feet away, where she supposedly laid Him in a manger just made me think, "Really? And who decided this?"
Well, according to legend, is was Saint Helena of Constantinople who was guided by "visions" as she pointed out the exact spots where Jesus was born, placed in the manger, was crucified, entombed, etc. Who was Helena? She was the mother of the Emperor Constantine. Constantine sent her on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land around the year 327 CE where she went around pointing out holy spots.
If you ever come to Philly I will point out to you the exact spot where Ben Franklin flew a kite, Betsy Ross sewed a flag, and Rocky climbed some steps ...
Las Vegas = Disneyland with slot machines. Back in the day, Vegas had class and attracted people with class. Now, the dress code is tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops. Inhabited by low-lifes.
Wisconsin Dells. I was there in June and just drove through. I laughed the entire time. The epitome of kitsch.
Excuse me? Las Vegas was much tackier back in the day and had less class. It was pretty much a mob and gangster hangout that they desperately tried to make classy by hiring Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack to play Vegas to add clout to it. They didn't hang out there because it was fun. They were paid a lot of money to make appearances there.
Vegas is much nicer now. Yes, it's more touristy now but it also helped clean it up and now regular people go to Vegas whereas pre-1990's, it was just a place for serious gamblers. They actually have upscale restaurants, shows and smoke free casinos. Back in the day, their shows consisted of cheesy lounge singers and cheap magicians. No one thought Vegas was classy then.
But in my experience, the three most tacky places are in order
1. Niagra Falls (Canadian side) - how many Ripley's wax museums do you need to have before it gets old
2. Branson Missouri - poor good ole boy version of Vegas
3. Atlantic City - cheap Vegas wannabe- dirty, smelly, meatheads and trashy people everywhere. Even Donald Trump has sued to have his name removed from two hotels he once owned.

Agree. That statement was like saying the nuns in habit you see around St. Peters are tacky.

I don't mind kitschy, but cheap-tacky and run down places just make me sad.
I took my kid to Cave City, Kentucky a few years ago to go to Mammoth Cave NP (which is amazing, btw) and while we were there we also visited Dinosaur World. Not terrible, but pretty run down and past it's prime. And the cartoon colored dinos were pretty tacky.
Hmmm...can you tell us what colors the dinosaurs really were? If so, scientists are waiting for you to share your knowledge!
I drove past this "attraction" this past summer, so can't comment about what was behind the fence that surrounded it, but many of the families who attended the same reunion which drew me to the area said their children had a blast at Dinosaur World. So I suppose it all depends on your POV.
