Back in 1999 when airports allowed non-passengers to go to the gates to see off friends or family members, we were waiting to board a red eye leaving from Las Vegas to Boston. Among those at the gate was a woman, probably in her late 20s, early 30s who was wearing extremely short shorts and a bra. It was even a bathing suit top, just a bra. Seriously, I figured that she was a local hooker seeing off one of her best customers But no...she boarded the plane.

On that same flight (which was a wide body), there was an extremely overweight woman who was occupying 2 seats. A flight attendant asked her if she paid for 2 seats and she said she did, even showing her tickets. I give that woman credit---1) She knew that she needed extra room; and 2) I'm sure that she knew it wouldn't be comfortable for her or another passenger if she only paid for 1 seat.

Later on, I discovered that if you complained to the gate agent that there was someone who was wearing offensive clothing or who smelled really bad, they would intervene. For example, they would make the woman who was only wearing a bra put on a shirt. Or they would have the bad smelling person clean up and put on deodorant.

Thank goodness I have my own airplane. I couldn't stand to fly commercially these days.

Back in the 1950s/1960s generally everyone dressed more formally wherever they went. Also flying was only open to the wealthiest people.

Are we supposed to be impressed? It didn't work.

Then what are you talking about? The fact that you can't get a steak knife on a plane anymore?

True. Look at the photos from the opening day at Disneyland. It was 90 degrees in the hot California sun and everyone was in Sunday best. Suit and tie for men, ladies in dresses and hose with gloves and hats.

I'm impressed anyone even gets a full aisle to sleep in. I haven't had one since 9/11.

I guess I've been pretty lucky. Haven't had any smelly folks. Never saw pee in the sink (although I'd guess once this site gets more popular, the Mile High Club will have a declining membership!). Worst it got for me was one drunk on a red-eye from Las Vegas who was pissed that I had the bulkhead seat with maybe 1" more legroom. He was about 6'4", I was 6'2". Kept intentionally pushing on my seat for a couple of hours while maintaining a steady stream of alcohol intake. Wasn't until he became obnoxious about being cut off from more booze that the stews took care of me with a bump to an open seat in biz class.

Only other memorable incident was when I was sitting next to a well-known political journalist on a DC shuttle. The guy was coughing all flight, and not covering his mouth once.
