Bring mosquito repellant! Apparently Chikungunya is a big deal in the Caribbean right now.

I went to Punta Cana in 2008 and did a pretty cool 4 wheeler/ATV tour where we swam in a natural underground pool in a cave and tried some excellent coffee from locals.

I would stay away from the "banana boats" that whip you around the ocean as I believe there was a bad accident soon after our stay.

Have some mamajuana for me!

Bring lots of sunscreen. The prices to buy more at the resorts if you run out are astronomical.

So we returned from Punta Cana and it was fabulous! We were there four full days plus two travel days. We stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro and it was first class the entire time. Food was fabulous, you could always find a chair at the pool or beach, and my hand was never empty for long, as a staff member kept the drinks coming. I only left the resort for one excursion - a half-day Reef Explorer trip. It was nice, but nothing out-of-this-world. Thanks to all for the tips!

Great to hear about your experience! A friend of mine and I will be at the all-inclusive AlSol in Punta Cana in January for 5 nights. We are both very experienced travelers but have never been to the DR before, so we're excited! I'm pretty sure that most of our time will be spent at the resort, as the purpose is simply sun/water/drinks, but I do want to take a half-day dive trip and maybe one other excursion.

Did you go into town or rent a car to explore?

No. The only time we left the resort was for organized excursions. Have a fun trip!
