Texting works just like here, every person, including in PRC, seems to have a smart phone in there hand. You will need some sort of international calling or data plan or else face expensive roaming charges.
I just spent a week in China with absolutely no need for an adapter - if you stay at a 5 star hotel they will have western plugs, or found USB ports to charge up on. Otherwise, yeah, you need an Asian adapter. Not sure if Japan uses different from China.
Most 4 and 5 star hotels also have there own hotel internet for free or a nominal charge. Airports will also have it. In China the internet sucks dealing with the Great Firewall of China.

For Korea:

They use the same plugs as Europe (Germany, Austria, France..) with 220V.

I would recommend multi voltage travel adapter, its good for nearly all countries.

Cell phones and messaging works very well, mobile internet is very fast, and many places offer free WIFI.

I think Japan uses US style power plugs, but I am not that sure about that anymore, it has been a while.

Even with an international plan it will still be very expensive. She'd be better off buying a new SIM (if her phone is unlocked) and topping it up locally.

Most new devices have converters built in although some do not. If they don't, an adapter alone won't work. It will specify this on the device or power cord.

She should keep her phone on airline mode & use wifi at like a coffee shop otherwise that's going to be one large bill that she'll be looking at.

In China there will be no problem to charge a cellphone from the USA. As already said, she should buy a local simcard and not use her American number in order to reduce expenses. Also in China many Western social media and news websites are blocked. So if this is important she should see about installing a VPN app on her cellphone (and VPN software on any laptop) prior to her leaving the USA.

Ask your daughter to buy a prepaid sim and upload some money from Japan other wise it will be too expensive. Better to carry a multi charger. Check the phone manual if that works world wide some phones does not. Mine did not work in Japan.

The Great Firewall of China - Lots of sites are blocked. Youtube was blocked, I think Facebook is blocked, on a previous trip CityData forum was blocked. Google is strange when you try to access it - it comes up with some sort of Chinese search engine. Probably no worry for her but we always pick up strange viruses and/or tracking software in China - occupational hazards for visiting US businessmen in PRC, probably no worry for tourists.

She needs to be sure to keep her phone and anything else with info of a sensitive nature on her at all times. Anything left in a hotel room should be considered compromised.
