I'd be interested if anyone has stories of actual use, either as the renter or the rentee. I'm curious about the insurance aspect and what happens if damage does occur. Also, if anybody has been scammed by it.

For those who do not know what I'm referring to, it's where you rent a car from a private individual, as opposed to a car company. In areas where rentals are high, this can be a less expensive alternative.

RelayRides (https://relayrides.com/) is a good example of a network set up for this.

I cannot speak of the service above.

However, nearly every personal insurance policy rules out using the car as a taxi or renting it out to others.

In my neck of the woods, car rentals could be had for less than $10/day from a national chain so I don't see the point of spending the same amount or more to drive older (and potentially less reliable) cars. Unless, of course, you are under 25 years old or have other reasons preventing you from renting one from a national chain.
